Assignment 2: Travel-related post

Cambodia

I have been to Cambodia several times to visit my grandmother and other relations. There, I spent most of the time in the capital Phnom Penh. I did also do all the sightseeing tours and I visited all the important locations like the beach in Sihanoukville, the Angkor Wat, the waterfall of the mountain Phnom Kulen, the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and strolled through the exotic markets all over the country. Last summer I’d decided to do something differently. I wanted to know how life at the countryside in Cambodia is and lived there for a week.

Some relations took me to the South of Cambodia near Kampot, well it’s in the middle of nowhere. This area is also called the coconut region as many coconut trees can be seen. It is also the main source of food in the southern regions. Coconuts can be used very differently in cooking or just for drinking. When it comes to cooking the farmers use

-coconut oil to fry fish or meat

-coconut milk for dishes like curry or soup with lemongrass and rice noodles as a side dish,
-desiccated coconut for sweet dishes
The coconut shells are also very useful for the people in that region. The dried coconut shells are used for cooking, in other words they are needed to make fire for cooking.

A life at the countryside is not that easy. A common day at the coconut region starts at 5 a.m. They wake up early to farm their land because their land is the only source of food. Afterwards they feed the animals (cow, pig, duck, chicken) and then they take a break. I had the opportunity to help the farmers to plant and harvest rice, but it was not easy as they didn’t have any machines which might facilitate their work.

At the end of the week the family cooked a traditional meal of their region which is chicken in coconut juice. When the coconut juice evaporates the chicken tastes a bit sweet, but it was awesome. I have never eaten something before and if I had the opportunity, I would eat it again.

Well, this travel showed me that you don’t need all the modern stuff to live and that it’s possible to be happy without a lot of property.
